I'm Ken Blackburn.  I was born in Oxnard California on March 24, 1963.  My family moved around the country for a few years as my dad's work for Western Electric moved.  When I was about 4 years old we settled in Kernersville, North Carolina on a 56 acre farm with horses, cows, chickens, ... I attended North Carolina State University from 1981 to 1985 when I graduated second in my class with a BS in Aeronautical Engineering. I accepted a job with McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, Missouri working in fighter aircraft fuel system research.  Two years later I switched to the aerodynamics department, where I have since worked on the YF-23, F/A-18, AV-8B, T-45, and research in the Phantom Works (the company has merged with Boeing, so now I am a Boeing employee).

OTHER THINGS I DO:

  • Homebuilt aircraft, own Piper Warrior II, designed/built Formula 1 air racer, do analysis and design for others, and working on my own designs
  • Work at Boeing in St Louis in Aerodynamics (Advanced Missiles)
  • Fiddle with hang gliders (have WW Sport), ultralights, and hydrofoils
  • I also: play softball( McDonnell Ducks), tennis, volleyball, cycle, snow ski, water ski, scuba , wind surf, surf, fly frisbees, boomerangs, stunt kites, model rockets, radio control gliders, and hovercraft
  • Formula 1 Air Racing: I worked on the AeroMagic Team  during the 1996 and 1997 seasons.  I am now working with Chuck Coleman on our own Formula 1 air racer design.
