Paper Airplane Contest

Ladue Jr High, St. Louis, Missouri
Saturday March 29th, 2003

Background:
This is a family fun event for anyone who wants to attend.  Primary sponsers are the AIAA and Ladue Jr. High, but all are welcome.  Some rules and guidelines are listed below, but we will almost certainly modify the rules as needed as we go.

Contests:
1) Time aloft will be in the morning.  A central throwing area in the gym will be used, and all contestants will form a line, with each contestant having a turn at a timed throw.  This will continue through the scheduled time alloted.  If a contestant wants to go again, they can get back in line.  Contestants can use a different plane for each throw, but only one plane and one throw per turn.  Time will be from when the plane leaves the contestants hand until it touches anything but air (floor, chair, wall, lights...).  Airplanes must be made from one sheet of 8.5x11 paper and can be brought to the contest.  Some tape, glue, or paper clips are allowed, but no other structural materials - the judges reserve the right to disqualify a paper airplane if it doesn't meet the spirit of the rules.  Prises will be awarded based on the following divisions:
Pre K- K
Grades 1-2
3-4
5-6
7-8
9-12
College student
Adults
Note: groups may be combined if there aren't sufficient contestants in a group.

2) Distance event will be in the afternoon. A central throwing area in the gym will be used, and all contestants will form a line, with each contestant having a turn at a measured throw.  This will continue through the scheduled time alloted.  If a contestant wants to go again, they can get back in line.  Contestants can use a different plane for each throw, but only one plane and one throw per turn.  Distance will be from when the plane leaves the contestants hand to where it comes to a stop - and it must travel in the desired direction (distance is measured down the gym floor - not across it).
Pre K- K
Grades 1-2
3-4
5-6

Note: groups may be combined if there aren't sufficient contestants in a group.
